Bedtime Stories

I turn around to face the bed, my head down.
Back to the pillow, but it's not shut-eye I seek.
Memories come back to me. I hear the sounds
Of children sing.  You laugh and hold onto me.

Don't let me go.  I'm hanging onto your pinky finger
In the middle of the night. You're singing softly.
My nose in the pillow where your flowers linger,
I'm falling asleep to these two senses.

You’re saving me from those monsters now,
The ones that dare to come into real life.
You chase them away and teach me how
To be my best come time and time.

The tears I weep don’t mean a thing
Because you’ve fought so hard and long.
I don’t know what the future brings,
But through you I’ll always be strong.

I wake up to a cold, dark cave.  I realize
I'm alone with no one to save me from the night.
You take my hand and tell me it’s alright.
I turn around to face the sky, knowing you’re always at my side.
